How to compress videos to make videos smaller

There are always times when we want to compress videos to make videos smaller for our portable players like iPhone, iPod, PlayBook, iPad, mobile phones, etc. Without a suitable and useful tool, it would be a rather hard problem for us to fulfill our entertainment.

Leawo DVD Ripper is a suitable tool to rip DVD to video in all kinds of formats while it can help you adjust the videos size to your content, to compress videos to make videos smaller for playback on portable devices or for space saving. Although it involves the knowledge on codec settings that matter in the task, it is nevertheless easy to learn, by following a step by step guide below.

How to compress DVD videos to make videos smaller with Leawo DVD Ripper guide:

Step 1: load the DVD movie into Leawo DVD Ripper for processing. After import, you will see numbers of titles and chapters listed in order. Select all to get a full length output or otherwise partial output by your wish.

Step 2: select a profile for the DVD conversion output. More than 100 profiles, with reference to common video formats and particular terminal formats, are in distinct order. You may judge on the file extension and the description for one that matches your need.

Step 3: assuming you have assigned a XviD profile, then click "Settings" to open codec settings panel. There is a full list of codec settings, dividing into two parts, for you to make distinct differences.

Video Codec: it is to determine which arithmetic to use in encoding the video. If you have ever uploaded videos to YouTube, you should be acquainted with YouTube's recommendations on uploaded video format, which are H.264, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Leawo DVD Ripper has many codec plugins to cover most picky demands.
Quality: it specifies how much the video quality is to preserve after conversion. High quality usually brings good details on screen with the only holdback of large file size. It is recommended for video backup or broadcasting. When you want to view the video on small screen or memory-tight terminals, low quality is the best choice.
Bit Rate: it describes the bits per second in the video stream, reflects the video quality and video size in number form.
Video Size: namely the actual resolution of the video display in full size. Common DVD video size is 720*480, or 480p.
Frame Rate: it gives the idea of the frames per second in the video stream. A smooth video usually adapts a frame rate higher than 24. If the video contains mostly intense shots, a higher frame rate is required. Otherwise, you can lower the frame rate and reduce redundant frames in a slow motion video.
Aspect Ratio: it affects the display style on your player. 4:3 is preferred aspect ratio for TV or standard CRT screen, while 16:9 is often favored by wide screen LCD screen.
Audio Codec: same to video codec, except it is dedicated to audio. A moderate choice is MP3 for its widespread popularity around cyberspace. AAC features a better performance in a smaller file size, preferred on memory-tight cell phones or PMPs. AMR is the best choice for carrying voice because of its slim body, but not suitable for music enjoyment.
Quality: same as video.
Bit Rate: same as video. Usually a video file would contain both video stream and audio stream, so the total bit rate will be the sum of video bit rate and audio bit rate.
Sample Rate: a factor that determines the details of audio. It goes the same as Frame Rate.
Channels: an audio stream can be single channel (mono), double channels (stereo) or even 5.1 channels (surrounding). It can be easily determined by how many sub sound boxes you have in your audio system.

Important rules to reduce the size on output:
1. Use high compressing codec such as H.264 to convert your movie. The output file size is smaller while the quality is better.
2. Do not apply too high settings on bit rate and sample rate. It will increase the output file size and obviously not in the direction to reduce it. A modest advice is to use the default settings to reach the best balance between video quality and file size.
3. Do not use overwhelming frame rate. 24 fps can well support a smooth movie playback while more means waste of frames and space.

Now you should get a picture of how the codec settings work and are ready to start conversion. Leawo DVD Ripper provides comfortable experience during conversion, such as batch converting and after done actions, brings the task easier and faster to its goal.

Here, I have got some latest DVD movie discs release news for all you guys and a list of DVD movies to be released next week.

Some recommended DVD movie discs released this week (June 7, this Tuesday) for weekend relaxation:

1. Just Go With It DVD disc.
In "Just Go With It" DVD, the plastic surgeon (Adam Sandler), romancing a much younger schoolteacher, enlists his loyal assistant (Jennifer Aniston) to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife, in order to cover up a careless lie. When more lies backfire, the assistant's kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a weekend in Hawaii that will change all their lives.

2. True Grit DVD disc
and Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) joins an aging U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) and another lawman (Matt Damon) in tracking her father's killer into hostile Indian territory in Joel and Ethan Coen's adaptation of Charles Portis' original novel. Sticking more closely to the source material than the 1969 feature adaptation starring Western icon John Wayne, the Coens' True Grit tells the story from the young girl's perspective, and re-teams the celebrated filmmaking duo with their No Country for Old Men producing partner Scott Rudin. Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper co-star.

3. Sanctum DVD disc
An intrepid team of explorers gets trapped in a complex underground cave system when a tropical storm makes it impossible to escape the same way they entered in this claustrophobic adventure drama from director Alister Grierson and executive producer James Cameron. Inspired by actual events, Sanctum tells the tale of Frank McGuire (Richard Roxburgh), a master diver intent on being the first to explore the Esa-ala cave system in the South Pacific. Shortly after Frank descends into the caves with a team that includes his teenage son, Josh (Rhys Wakefield), and expedition bankroller Carl Hurley (Ioan Gruffudd), a massive storm collapses the entrance to the system, forcing the adventurers to plunge deeper into the darkness in search of an alternate exit. With supplies quickly dwindling and water levels rapidly rising, Frank and his team surmise that their best hope for survival is to follow an underground river thought to empty into the ocean. But given that few explorers have ever even dared set foot in the Esa-ala system, no one quite knows for sure whether they're racing toward freedom, or another dead end.

4. Blue Crush 2 DVD disc
Dana, a killer surfer from California, travels to the breathtaking coasts of South Africa, determined to fulfill her mother's dream of surfing the legendary Jeffrey's Bay. With nothing but her mom's journal as a guide and a fun-loving group of surf fanatics watching her back, Dana faces epic waves, tough locals and her own fears in this unforgettable surf odyssey.

5. Biutiful DVD disc
A love story between a father and his children. This is the journey of Uxbal, a conflicted man who struggles to reconcile fatherhood, love, spirituality, crime, guilt and mortality amidst the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona. His livelihood is earned out of bounds, his sacrifices for his children know no bounds. Like life itself, this is a circular tale that ends where it begins. As fate encircles him and thresholds are crossed, a dim, redemptive road brightens, illuminating the inheritances bestowed from father to child, and the paternal guiding hand that navigates life's corridors, whether bright, bad -- or biutiful.
